It's probably just further proof that there's plenty of room in this medium for works from other art forms if the source material is treated sensibly. Call me crazy, but maybe we're looking at another one of those cases where video games could be able to resurrect a character that has died because of cinema. And then they say there's no cultural value here... what a shame. [Hands-On Impressions]
After a couple of hours going hands-on with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I’ve not only gone back to revisit the films thanks to a revitalised want for adventure, I’ve come away unexpectedly high on the project after spending so long unconvinced. Not only was I unequivocally wrong to doubt MachineGames, as their care for this IP seems second to none, but they’re set to deliver the Uncharted that team Xbox has needed, albeit through a much different lens. So far, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle isn’t just the Indiana Jones adventure that fans have waited 40 years for; it’s the video game that the franchise has truly deserved. MachineGames seems to be a match made in heaven for the franchise, and we left our demo extremely keen to play more. [3-Hour Hands-On Impressions]
The game's almost sensual need to lay Indy's mitts on everything says a lot about Indiana Jones as a character who figures things out as he bumps into them. It also speaks to The Great Circle's unsurprising and rather numbing portrayal of "history" as a collectible commodity, but let's not get too self-righteous straight off the bat. Upcoming action-adventure game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is shaping up to be a wonderful interpretation of the blockbuster film franchise. In just a few hours of hands-on with an early build, I enjoyed getting to grips with the titular archaeologist's robust toolset and experiencing a surprisingly rich combat system that saw fascists whipped, whacked, and walloped in all manner of amusing ways. There is one thing about The Great Circle that is uniquely suited to video games. While a movie will have Indy focused on the main plot, a game allows him to split his focus. Multiple opportunities for side missions (called Fieldwork) arise and allow for Indy to search for other rare artifacts, mythical phenomena, or anything else that might belong in a museum. These will sometimes consist of involved searches that span multiple stages or they'll be smaller treasures that can be found off the beaten path. These will also have their own distinct puzzles and lateral thinking sections, with one example containing a wall that needed to be breached with a nearby sledgehammer and a moss-covered door that could be burned down with a lighter purchased from one of the merchants in the Gizeh town square. Combining exploration, puzzles and mystery, it scratched an itch in the adventurer inside me that I hadn’t felt since the last time I spent with Lara Croft or Nathan Drake. Any hesitation I had about an Indiana Jones video game in 2024 has been promptly removed; it just feels good, man, and I can’t wait to continue the caper later this year. SummaryThe standalone adventure starring the legendary archaeologist will tell a wholly original tale set at the height of the career of the famed adventurer.
