Pedro Páramo uses its supernatural language to inform the audience of the consequences of a collective wrongdoing. It is also remarkably efficient at communicating different storylines to the audience without making viewers get lost in the process.
The images are vivid, but the storytelling remains elusive and elliptical, exploring the title character from different perspectives without ever pinning him down.
Thankfully, its surreal allure — buoyed by a sense of tragic longing — is powerful enough to echo throughout its runtime.
Strangely, given Prieto’s visual acumen, the film is also a bit bland visually, bar a flashy prologue kicked off by the camera sinking into the bowels of the earth. But the story has enough residual power to deliver a dark night of the Mexican soul nonetheless.
Even when the storytelling falls short, Pedro Páramo never fails to offer up ideas worth pondering.
You’d think the DP would be ready to flex his muscles on his directorial debut, but Pedro Páramo, even with occasional forays into glossy surrealism, can be summed up as prosaic: a project hyper-concerned with respectability and never risking too much in images or narrative.
Where this rich, metaphysical text might have come alive in dreamlike abstraction, Prieto and his screenwriter, Mateo Gil, instead content themselves with a prestige Western on terra firma — grave, good-looking and uninspiring.

O primeiro terço é muito bom, posto que é feito sem pressa, com o tempo necessário para nos importarmos pelo menos com o filho, que irá trazer de volta o passado e imiscuir presente e passado, vida e morte, num clássico da literatura. O excesso de personagens prejudica, porém, a adaptação, que precisará correr e, com isso, da metade em diante a gente mal se importa com quem morre. A fotografia meio escurecida e empoeirada me agrada bastante, mas confesso senti um pouco de tédio visual com o passar do tempo. A cena da cidade com fogo poderia ser muito melhor para causar certo contraste, mas infelizmente o filme vai pelo fácil e pelo óbvio (talvez pelo mais barato), e tudo o mais se torna burocrático. Ainda assim uma adaptação digna para se pensar sobre a morte e os fantasmas que ainda assombram os vivos.

The problem with 'Pedro Páramo' is the literalness with which it adapts Juan Rulfo's work. The reality is that the probability of success was minimal because if it had taken liberties to make it a better film, the purists would have put an end to it. Rodrigo Prieto shows great visual mastery, but not his directing ability; Manuel García Rulfo, as the title character, does not leave a significant impression. Perhaps the most outstanding are Ilse Salas, Roberto Sosa, and Dolores Heredia. Cohesion is also conspicuous by its absence at various times, making it easy to get lost in times, spaces, and situations. Nevertheless, Prieto must be given credit for having thrown himself into the ring for the first time as a director with a rather ambitious project. There is no doubt that he managed to capture the epicness of the original material, but it is in the intimacy of the characters where he falters the most.
