If you want to see great acting that’s unadorned, not fancy, and very much in the style of 2024, see Plaza in the climactic scene from “My Old Ass.” You will walk out of this film different than when you walked in, and a little bit better for the experience.
Canadian filmmaker Megan Park’s comedy is a touching charmer about growing up, and about that gradual, heartbreaking realization that everything has a last time. If all this sounds a little gooey, let’s remember that this movie features Aubrey Plaza, a wonderfully sardonic performer apparently incapable of goo.

This movie is so well written and so full of heart. All the actors are great but I was not prepared for the depth pf feeling Aubrey Plaza brought. In a few moments, near the end, she is truly amazing.

I went not really knowing about My Old Ass and left thing it was one of the BEST MOVIES I’ve seen in many years! I love movies and go to 1 a week for 8 years! Maisy was wonderful and Plaza perfect!! I laughed, I cried and left thinking about my own mistakes in life and if I could change them would I !? It was truly a tripping idea that was meant to be a trip— it succeeded!

Ultimately, not only has Park crafted an often hilarious and entertaining coming-of-age movie, but a surprise tearjerker.
My Old Ass is a slender film, but it’s so nicely judged and so infused with a generosity of spirit toward all its characters, across the generations, that its sentimentality acquires substance.
The moment Park focuses her screenplay on — the weeks before leaving for college — is well-trodden territory for young-adult movies. To counter this, she has an uncommonly strong script for the genre, balancing the sappy and sentimental with a slangy skater-queer-cool-kid voice inhabited comfortably by both Stella and Plaza.
Director-writer Megan Park has crafted a wistful coming-of-age tale using this comedic device for “My Old Ass” and the results are uneven even though she nails the landing.
When it comes to taking this premise in interesting directions, however, Ms. Park proves inept.

Megan Park mantém a consistência após o ótimo "The Fallout", entregando agora um coming out interessante de uma jovem que se depara com seu eu do futuro. Pena que alguns conselhos e suas respectivas resoluções estejam num nível raso. Mas acerta em cheio nas resoluções principais de seus personagens (especificamente entre a mãe e o namorado). Aliás, o filme emociona ao falar do tempo e de como a adolescência explode em conflitos internos.

Ok enough with some tried and true sentimental messaging and values about family and the passage of time. For me it just laid it a little thick and, pardon me, but it was a little too much up its own ass.
