Robot Dreams reminds us that animated feature doesn’t mean “movie for kids.”
Romance and cinema are ideal bedfellows for all sorts of obvious reasons, but on screen, the beauty of friendship can be harder to pin down. This wise and wondrous (and wordless) animation does it better than any other film in recent memory – and in ways a six-year-old could effortlessly grasp.

Sueñan los robots con ovejas eléctricas? Uno de los pocos pero notables ejemplos del cine animado de Europa, más exactamente España. La ausencia de diálogos no es un defecto sino su mejor virtud y, deja de manifiesto que, se puede hacer buen cine animado con mucha invectiva y sin grandes presupuestos. A tomar nota, gente de Disney.

This is a movie that feels, in the best way, like the last day of summer: radiant, bittersweet, redolent of memories in the making.
Robot Dreams—as much a movie about coupledom as it is about friendship—sneaks up on you with an ending that both eulogizes the ones that got away and celebrates the memories that they had left behind.
The characters are animated with such clarity of expression, and the film is edited so expertly, that lines just aren't necessary.
Pablo Berger’s “Robot Dreams” is a lovely fable about partnership and imagination, a movie that uses the form of animated cinema to tell a story in a way that couldn’t be possible in any other medium.
The use of music and sound design is very thoughtful throughout, capturing the way music by street performers makes life in the city feel like a musical all the time while the murmur of traffic and general hubbub creates its own atonal backing track.
Robot Dreams is a visually stunning animated film set against the vibrant backdrop of 1980s New York. The city’s vivid colours bring the era to life, creating a perfect setting for this profoundly moving story.
The film’s excellent storytelling explores complex emotions with ease and grace. In the Spanish indie animated film, in 1980s New York, a lonely dog named Dog sees an infomercial for a robot and orders him in order for him to have and make a new friend as they go on several misadventures together. Written and directed by Pablo Berger, this animated gem was nominated for the best animated feature Academy Award at this past year's Oscars, and it's easy to see why. Featuring no dialogue from its anthropomorphic characters, the film is a silent tale of love, friendship, and the harsh reality of how sometimes friends come and go in life. Each vibrant and colorful frame is a sheer delight to watch, and the film often made me laugh and even made me want to cry at times. But overall, it's a sweet and tender-hearted look at a beautiful and unexpected friendship and the places it can take you. Also, the recurring use of 'September' by Earth, Wind and Fire throughout is one of the most delightful things I've seen in a film all year long!

Interestingly, this animated film is set in 80s NYC (the Trade Towers are in the background). Even so, it's set in a world where all types of animals are the residents, no people. A lonely dog orders an automated friend and they start to have fun in the city. After their trip to the beach, robot is left in the sand, where he fantasizes about various ways to return to his dog. The design is simple with plenty of clever animal characters and occasional smart comic directorial touches. There is no dialogue, but there are plentiful sound effects and lots of music. Surprisingly, lots of name brands show up from Juicy Fruit to Fruit Loops. It breaks no new stylistic ground for animation, but does feature a simple sweet tale of a special friendship.
