A Solid story, inventive gameplay mechanisms, both third and first person views, a slew of spy equipment, awesome weapons, unique emotional plot and stealth make MGS one of PlayStation's greatest games ever.
The tense atmosphere and sense of urgency the game is able to generate is downright stunning. I often found myself gripping the controller so tight my knuckles would be turning white!
While it is playable, and actually pretty fun a lot of the time, it has some serious, nearly game ruining flaws that, for me, made it a complete disappointment.
Really fun game, it has memorable gameplay and a great story, still holds up today in some respects. I find a lot of people hate the controls, and it does take time getting used to, but it isn't that bad really, there are games with worse controls - tank controls. This game has a lot of 4th wall breaking and secrets and can get pretty meta. A very *solid* entry to the series, well worth a try. It has many creative gimmicks, such as using vibration, save data and controller ports. Has some very humorous parts, but serious ones too. It also contains a recap of the first 2 games as a bonus. The graphics are also great for its time.
MGS has a fantastic story, great characters, and innovative mechanics. The rest however, ranges from serviceable to downright terrible. The gameplay is very mixed bag. The range of gear and stealth mechanics is quite nice, the gunplay on the other hand is absolutely terrible. Trying to aim at anything is an exercise in futility. The sniper rifle adds another layer of miserable gameplay by making it virtually unusable unless you have a steadying drug on hand. The bosses overall are pure trash. They are a chore to get through. Ocelot has you basically running in circles for the entire fight. The tank is a joke you just walk up to and kill. Sniper Wolf is a sniper-off where the real boss is the horrible controls. The real insult is you have to do this fight TWICE. The final boss Liquid Snake, is a miserable slug fest that strips you of all items. Another fight where most of the challenge is the bad controls, making you waste time from the clock. MGS deserves its reputation for what it brought to the table in its time, but at the end of the day, a game is a game, and it's the gameplay, not the story, that matters most. What could have been an excellent experience gets ruined by these borderline painful moments.
7/10
Metal Gear Solid (MGS) is a classic title for the ps1 and one of the greatest game of all time, that's what most people would say. MGS is a good game don't get me wrong, but its an overrated one.
MGS's story is phenomenal and extremely compelling I don't blame people to purchase the game just for the story but the main glaring issue is the controls, the controls are an outdated mess and ruins the game significantly.
The controls ruins the story at most points because it replaces the feeling of intensity with pure frustration and it destroys the game because of it, a prime example of this problem is the fight with liquid on top of Metal Gear Rex the cut-scene that lead to this conflict was to put it simply, intense and thrilling but the moment you fight liquid the game falls flat on its face and makes the player suffer from horrible controls and it kills the atmosphere.
overall MGS is only good for the story and the controls are a god awful mess that kills the overall game.
