It's genuinely funny, yet it's also scary, especially for young women: it plays on their paranoid vulnerabilities... Mia Farrow is enchanting in her fragility: she's just about perfect for her role.
Truly frightening because so much of it is so plausible, ROSEMARY'S BABY is one of the finest examples of modern horror, a milestone in the evolution of the genre. Although the subject matter is ultimately supernatural, the treatment is very realistic.

One of the films that forever changed the face of the horror genre. Based on the homonymous novel and, despite the calm rhythm of the plot, one as a spectator cannot avoid being infected by the anxiety and paranoia of the future mother. See it without further delay and beware of imitations.

Rosemary’s Baby is one of horror cinema’s all-time slow burns, drawing viewers gradually into entertaining the possibility that the movie’s series of strange coincidences and accumulating sense of dread are only subjective representations of Rosemary’s unraveling mental state.
Using New York’s famed apartment house the Dakota for all its cavernous shadowiness, and exploiting the 23-year-old Farrow’s tremulous space-child vulnerability to underscore her terror and solitude, Polanski worked with an elegant restraint that less talented filmmakers have been trying to mimic ever since.
Polanski’s direction is smooth and the film itself happily understated. The tension created is practically unbearable.
Miss Farrow is quite marvelous, pale, suffering, almost constantly on-screen in a difficult role that requires her to be learning for almost two hours what the audience has guessed from the start...Everyone else is fine, but the movie—although it is pleasant—doesn't quite work on any of its dark or powerful terms.

Despite the fact that director Roman Polanski is a very problematic figure, his artistic talent as a director cannot be denied. Polanski is one of the best movie directors of all time, and Rosemary's Baby is the apex of his work.
For those interested in the art of filmmaking and visual storytelling, there is no better example to learn from.
In addition to being an artistic milestone, Rosemary's Baby also is one of the finest horror and psychological thriller movies to this day. It brilliantly illustrates that jump scares or gore -- of which it contains almost none -- have nothing to do with true horror and are not at all necessary to make a movie scary.

Dans le genre diabolique, j’ai vu sensiblement mieux ailleurs ! Même si Roman Polanski sait distiller une certaine tension… qui ne grimpe malheureusement que par à-coups ici et là : entre un temps d’exposition inutilement long et une scène finale trop longtemps attendue (mais à la fois édifiante et drolatique) son film se traîne comme une vieille tortue.
Heureusement, la si jolie et si mignonne Mia Farrow (allez, fais miaaoou pour voir !) et l’énigmatique pour ne pas dire étrange John Cassavetes aident à tenir la rampe parce que sinon on dégringolerait dans l’escalier, frappé de narcolepsie télévisuelle.
Naturellement, la mise en scène est très soignée, trop soignée peut-être, car sa lenteur cherche à nous faire piquer un somme. Mia(ou) est là toutefois, une actrice étonnante ; Polanski aime la filmer, on adore la regarder.

Not much to complain about really. Looks and sounds good for the age. Probably a bit oversaturated and tinny compared to modern releases. Interesting idea and probably well done at the time but it is too subtle since the seventies graphic intense revolution. Problem is that it is not that scary. It should be because her neighbours worship the devil and recruit her husband. Not only that but you are **** by the devil and forced to gestate its only child. There are secret doors and crazy drugs and sects but it is all underplayed so that it is not scary, creepy or has suspense. For shame! Even The Omen (1976) executes the idea better. If you can get past how much it is underplayed it would be quite good.

Overrated is one word that comes to mind. Quick info on me, I was born in '79 and I have never seen this film until today. To say this is a "horror" film is a stretch and some critics have this film in the top horror films of all time, it's not. The movie drags and is very boring, nothing really happens for most of the run time, 137min. Here is the other part that is kinda sick, there is basically a **** scene in the film and if you know anything about Mr. Polanski, well watching that part in 2019 was a little strange. I think this is one of the films where if you mention it around other film lovers they will say how great it is, but if you were to really ask them about a certain scene (example the stupid ending)they would have no response because they probably have never watched it and just read a critics review in order to fit in.

I had a really tough time getting into this movie. To the point where I found it just severely dragged at times and failing to keep my interest. Don't get me wrong, Farrow does a great job and I think the premise is interesting enough yet for some reason, this movie just didn't click with me.
