This is a story that is perfectly weighted between bleak and warm, poignant and irreverent.
There ends up being something really profound about the way A Real Pain lets the undercurrent of history serve as contrast to the deeply felt emotions of its core character story.

Beautifully written and brilliantly performed, this simple and effective roadtrip buddy dramedy is equally hilarious and heartfelt. Selecting Chopin (Polish!) as the sole soundtrack elevates this little gem as well.
How much external expression one should attempt to not lose connection with the world, and how much internal processing one must endure to stay functioning in this cruel world? Why do we love and admire some family members yet at the same time almost intentionally detach from the family?
I miss my cousin after watching this. Born 3 years apart I used to spend every summer with her as teens. Then I moved overseas and never came back. She settled down and got married. I’ve only met her baby once…maybe I should have tried harder.
Maybe I’ll call her today.

What a beautifully written and performed film this is. It's incredibly funny, but underpinned by a darkness - hence the title - that is really moving and poignant. There isn't a minute wasted in a script that's as tight as a nut. A real special film.

Though the film only provides a snapshot of a moment in time, Culkin’s performance is so spectacular that it makes it feel as though we have known Benji forever.
Together, [Culkin and Eisenberg] make for a winning pair, balancing each other in a variety of ways that speak to the material’s larger concerns about loss, grief, remembrance and regret.
A Real Pain is a hilarious and tender drama that shows us that truly living is the only way to honor those we've lost.
Make no mistake: Culkin is the movie’s heart and soul as the eccentric, unpredictable wanderer Benji, but “A Real Pain” is — at the risk of it being too early in the filmmaker’s career to coin this term — Eisenbergian through and through.
It’s thin and flat, the opposite of inventive, surprising, daring or insightful. Though it’s billed as a comedy-drama, nothing in it generates laughs, even of the cringe variety.
Foltks -- this movie is NOT a comedy. It's primarily a very "angst-driven" film that was more annoying and frustrating to me than enjoyable. With that said, it certainly is decent for what it is. It's about twoJewish cousins who go on a trip to Poland to visit the house their grandmother lived in as a child. Along the way, the go to a concentration camp and tour it. The performances are good. Again, it aint a comedy.
