Here is not a film for everyone. It tries something different, with a single focused camera angle and a story that takes place over hundreds (or millions) of years. But that is also part of the issue that keeps it from excelling. We get little time with every story point, with most scenes taking 1-5 minutes before jumping to the next scene. It also takes a bit to get going before we get to the meat of the story.
If it had been a bit more focused on our main group of characters, the ending would have had a much bigger impact. There was also a bit too much CGI that looked rough and a focus on getting characters right up to the camera for scenes all felt a bit too forced. It’s also a bit over the top of how much stuff happens in a single space.
In the end, ‘Here’ is an ambitious film that ultimately fails to deliver a fully satisfying story as it’s too concerned with its notion of showing you everything that has happened in this one spot and making the camera angle the main focal point of the story.

Don’t force a plot to emerge. Better to experience “Here” like open-eyed meditation, nodding at connections and ideas so fragile they’d disintegrate if said aloud.

It’s a film so soulless I questioned the point of it.
For a film about living, Here is a remarkably lifeless endeavour.
Director Robert Zemeckis is known for pushing tech boundaries in films like Back to the Future, Forrest Gump and The Polar Express. This time he's adapting the design **** novel to tell the story of one space thru history. The camera remains static in a wide shot, as we watch it evolve thru time to include indigenous people, Colonial construction and the final house thru several decades. The primary thrust is the tale of one family that includes Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, as they de-age and age thru the years. There are other mini-plots from other periods. This all sounds cool and it is. It also lacks much emotional resonance, primarily because of the distant camera and the jumping plot. There are threads of common human experience in the stories, but the disjointed structure and short episodes makes them less interesting and involving. A flat, failed visual effects experiment.

Banal. Hacky. A slog. The movie is all these things but even more of an issue is that these celebrities have burned all their cultural currency by shrieking like hysterical women about contemporary progressive politics; the movie could be great, but seeing Tom Hank’s gormless face or Paul Bettany’s mug just make me remember them seething uncontrollably about politics.

Dull and drab, Here wastes a good cast of actors on a film meant to be emotional, also with the drawback of using generative AI to de-age the actors, rather than CGI, practical effects, or even a younger actor. And the moment you use generative AI, that looks really bad at times, your score gets knocked down immediately to a 0.
