It’s easy to see what Camel 101 was going for as it constructed Those Who Remain’s dark and foreboding world, but while the intent was noble, the execution leaves much to be desired. The game’s low price point might appeal to someone who’s desperate for a new game to play, but any wayward souls who come across the exit for Dormont while cruising the horror game highway should just keep on driving.
There is an awful lot to like about Those Who Remain, but unfortunately, there is also a lot which will leave players deeply frustrated. Its most fundamental problem is that it tries to do too much. The atmosphere and storytelling, particularly at the start of the game is a great start, but the developers felt the need to add elements of survival horror, which ultimately exacerbate rather than scare.
Those Who Remain has a lot of merit because it is made by an independent studio with modest means. It seems to me that it is mysterious and disturbing. Who are those shadows? What do they want?. If you are a fan of twisted horror video games you should play it.
Those who remain is not the standard blockbuster popcorn game. This game is meant for the real folks who enjoy a good psychological horror story. Set in a foggy and almost mystic atmosphere, you will need to handle some pretty tense and scary moments during gameplay. This is not a predictable story. The game puts you to think how to survive to all the horror experience. Great concept, storytelling and graphics for an Indie game. Forget about what you read in other reviews. This game is meant for real horror fians and connoisseurs so give it a try.
Those Who Remain is difficult to recommend, but there is an interesting meditation on guilt, redemption, and judgement hidden amongst an unfortunate mass of clunky design and gameplay. It might even be that watching someone else play the game is the best way to enjoy it, so you won't have to fight the controls and frustrating checkpoints. Ultimately, the game itself fails to live up to the potential of its ideas. This is one that should remain on the shelf.
With two different endings, Those Who Remain is worth playing through all the way at least once to find out how the story ends. But with so many issues, it’s hard to find the motivation to jump back in to reveal that second ending. There’s a small bit of horror and well-crafted atmosphere on offer, but it’s short lived – and there’s definitely better games to play in the genre. Maybe give it a miss, at least until the technical issues have been (hopefully) fixed.
David Lynch isn't afraid to make art that is impenetrable, hard to interpret. That's part of his genius: the absurdity of horror, the natural beauty of the uncanny. Those Who Remain draws inspiration from him in surface alone. There's the diner, the winding road. But Edward's internal journey is afraid to say anything new or original. And as a result, the player isn't afraid at all.
I think this game is an interesting, if not a little clunky, tribute to Silent Hill. It's got the themes of forgiveness and condemnation and being trapped in your own personal hell, which I thought was interesting.
And it was definitely creepy, and terrifying at parts: The constant presence of the figures in the dark keeps you on edge, especially if you have to edge into a room to turn on a light. The stalker monster in the game presented a challenge as well.
That being said, the game's interactivity can be limited, and sometimes you end up spinning your wheels trying to figure out what to do next. There's a LOT of searching for clues/information in this game, and when the developers have made every locker, drawer, and box openable, it can be a daunting task.
Not an A+ game, but I thought it was a pretty good one otherwise.
for the most part this is your standard ps4 era first person horror game. mostly sneak and hide (no combat) some puzzles, some decision making, etc. The atmosphere is a trip though and the story is fairly engaging. the main drawback is there is no manual save, so at times if you get dead, you may have to replay entire chapters until you figure out the plan. it's also a bit short. will be doing my third play through tonight, and hopefully the platinum will be mine !!!!!
The game doesn't look good, play good, or accomplish the horror game like idea it saught to be like. But I hope this dev continues to go on. It's not great, but has promise, and some gameplay idea if further fleshed out could turn into a good game.
SummaryAs the lights go out, the embers of darkness are stoked in the sleepy town of Dormont. Confront uncomfortable horrors, keep your sanity in check and survive the night in this story-driven first-person psychological-thriller.
