It is hard to translate just how satisfying it feels to tear through a horde of heathens in Darktide as its thunderous soundtrack plays to words. The best way to do so seems to be simply saying that it is spot-on enough to surely please any fan of Warhammer or horde shooters. Darktide is a Primarch amongst Warhammer games, and it serves the corpse emperor admirably.
If it goes the distance, Warhammer 40K: Darktide will get better with time. As it stands it's an enjoyable romp through an almost endearingly macabre world.
As far as I understand game was not as good before patch 13 but I started playing juast when patch 13 came out and the game is AMAZING, pure action, non stop hordes of enemies great mechanichs weapons and classes, either playing with a squad of friends or randoms the game is oure fun.
The gameplay is great, brutal and dynamic, at the same time the game came straight with a decent selection of maps, albeit very similar. You will enjoy slashing, shooting and throwing out hordes of enemies with grenades. But the authors have literally not put many systems into the game yet, and more content will come later.
One day, Warhammer 40K: Darktide will be a great game. Fatshark, like many developers, has yet to perfect the art of the rough landing. A polished core experience can't overcome woeful performance and blatantly unfinished features, like the (almost) entirely missing crafting system. I'm confident, however, support will continue until Darktide ends up being the game we all hoped it would be.
One should expect more from the extremely rich Warhammer 40k lore. Darktide has some good ideas but commits the ultimate sin for a game: it becomes boring due to its extreme repetitiveness.
Today it's a really good game. I tried it on PC Game Pass then bought it on Steam and nowadays they added a new talent system that really makes each class have its own place. I really enjoy it, my only quirk with it is the current lack of maps and no real variations whatsoever, but that's really about it. If it had some semi-procedural system where at least you could have mixed layouts that'd make it a solid 10/10, you really get tired of the same maps
Darktide in its current state is probably the best co-op horde shooter on the market. The skill based combat mechanics are a refinement from Vermintide games. Combat feels smooth and rewarding and could be considered 10/10 by some. Darktide also offers the most immersive WH40K visuals, atmosphere and appropriate music out of any current game. There is a story there, but it is not presented in an easy to follow manner, nor does it feel complete.
After a rough start the game now feels mostly complete, besides some QoL improvements and the odd omission of a mission end scoreboard. PC players can add desired features through mods, but console players are left hanging.
Biggest downside is the new content release schedule. Free updates are appreciated, but feel small in their contents for the regular player. Cash shop is another strike against Darktide. Best looking cosmetics can only be purchased with real money instead of in-game currency. To make matters worse, the cosmetics rotate in and out of the shop, making it difficult to obtain desired skins even if the player is willing to further open their wallets.
What the game needs are chunky content rich updates or dlc and a roadmap from the developers to inform the loyal playerbase what to expect in the future.
For fans of WH40k universe and the co-op horde shooter genre, Darktide does deliver.
Overall great concept with insane rich lore to pull from but its just so let down by its lack of updates and classes.
its currently almost 2 years later and the game now is still not where i expected it to be on launch day. we have zero new classes and zero new subclasses. we had over triple that amount in vermintide.
if darktide keeps getting updated and keeps getting free content it will easily be a 10/10 game some day its got a great foundation, a great gameplay loop and fun combat.
I realy wish Fatshark would replicate their great models, maps and gameplay in a different engine. I still sometimes play Darktide but it is 100% DESPITE the effing garbage engine that they use. I cant get a stable framerate at even the lowest settings, hit registration issues are even more evident given the amount of ranged weapons compared to vermintide. There has been 1 new Map sinsce release which honestly i realy like a lot. But still the awful bugs, performance issues and also weird rendering of smoke and sometimes light are ruining the experience for me. Just make the same thing in something like Unreal and might even purchase something from the stupid cosmetics store.
