I really enjoyed Unknown 9: Awakening; I loved its pulpy globetrotting action tone and likable cast, and the combat and stealth were rather a lot of fun. The ability to remote control foes and turn them against their allies was a cool unique mechanic that, if anything, could have stood to be even more central to the gameplay. Despite some less-than-stellar boss fights and a somewhat shallow main villain, I had a very good time with Unknown 9: Awakening, and so might you. Hopefully it, and the rest of the Unknown 9 expanded universe, will find enough of an audience that we will see more of Haroona’s story in the future.
Unknown 9 Awakening is a competent title with some outdated and flawed designs, but with a larger universe and lore that is undeniably compelling. It’s well worth dealing with the rough edges if that idea excites you (especially at its reduced price tag!).
This AA game offers a good promise, especially the stepping mechanics. The story is also pretty enjoyable. However I have to admit it has a few technicals issues, but I heard the studio had a bumpy ride during the production process. Animations are stiff, cinematics are weak, and there sitll a few bugs here and there.
This game is very cool. Some people don't like it just because SBI company participated in this project, it is a company that helps diversity and inclusion. Having a NON-sexualized female character is very appreciated, thank you for that. Visually it's a very beautiful game.
Had it been released in the middle of the last generation, perhaps Unknown 9: Awakening would have had a different effect. Today it is really hard to be impressed by a video game like this, technically and conceptually too old in which the only thing that is promoted is the story.
This could easily have become a real hit of the best double-A kind if the game had received just a little more time, a slightly bigger budget and more polish. Unfortunately, the experience is also muddled by bad combat, clumsy directing and several problems of the technical and visual kind. Still, it's not hard to gleam the diamond in the rough here, and hopefully the developers at Reflector will be given more opportunities in the future after their debut, because there is definitely a lot of potential here.
Unknown 9: Awakening is a work that lives within the contradictions between AAA video game ambitions and ideas, and an execution that falls below contemporary standards: while Reflector Entertainment has focused everything on telling the story of Haroona (Anya Chalotra) and building the universe of the Nine Unknown, the technical execution has ended up becoming an insurmountable obstacle.
While many AA games manage to cleverly hide a small budget, the developers of Unknown 9: Awakening have failed in this art. Every element of this game reminds us that we are dealing with an underdeveloped product that proved too challenging for Reflector Entertainment. I don't understand why the studio didn't pick one style of gameplay and focus its limited resources on it. Add to this the poor performance of the PS5 version and serious technical problems, and you get a below-average title.
Unknown 9: Awakening is the video game adaptation of a larger scale project that incorporates other ways of content; and unfortunately falls short. On paper, the proposals seem intriguing, but they have gaps and fail to stand out. It has generic combat, a story that doesn't look interesting and graphics from two generations ago, the fact that Anya Chalotra plays the protagonist couldn't even save it.
Okay so I played this game about 1 hour and honestly I don’t know why everyone hates it. I listened to the story and I play on hard difficulty. The combat is fun and immersive.
Lots of good ideas, but somewhat poorly executed. Gameplay was great, but I ran into some graphics bugs along the way. Boss fights are unnecessarily challenging and way too easy at the same time (and I know that sounds odd). There is also one type of enemy where you basucally just hide and reflect bullets over and over to beat them, which is a waste of time. Still, I think this game is worth the play if you like "Uncharted" style games. Wait for a $30 price and it will be worth the play.
Alright, lemme break it down for ya, kid.
Unknow 9: Awakening, huh? Well, let me tell ya, it's a real mixed bag. The cinematics are top-notch, no doubt about it. The mise-en-scene is a feast for the eyes, and the actors do a bang-up job. The lighting is like a movie star, and the art direction is a ****, here's the thing: the gameplay is a whole different story. The possession mechanic is kinda cool, but it feels like it's just there for show. The character progression is like a snail on ice. Haroona's just dropped into the world, and we don't really get a sense of her goals or motivation. The game mechanics are repetitive and feel unnatural. The white markers are like a babysitter, and the animations are a bit buggy. The sound is great, but it could use a bit more **** hey, the voice acting is fantastic. Anya's portrayal of Haroona is top-notch. And the UI... well, let's just say it's a bit of a headache. The power tree is a cool feature, but it's not **** it wasn't for the cinematics, I'd give this game a 4. The potential is there, but it's buried under a pile of gameplay issues. The developers need to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. Otherwise, they might wanna consider a career change to moviemaking.Final score: 7/10.
Summarizing Unknown 9: Awakening's problems in one conclusion is difficult - there are simply too many. In terms of gameplay and presentation, the title lags years behind all current standards; neither the story nor the cliched characters can be attributed any significant positive facet. The few good ideas are almost completely lost in the overwhelming presence of mediocre genre standards. And the tricky combat system is finally the nail in the coffin due to stupidly acting opponents and the chronically hostile camera operation. What was supposed to be the start of a new franchise could quickly turn into a stillbirth. No matter what audience a product like this is aimed at, it’s just not a good thing.
Huge disappointment. Awakening was supposed to be Uncharted style adventure, with equal amount of exploration, puzzle solving and combat. But what we get is basically just tedious and dull combat thru samey levels, and that's it. Similarly, the game was supposed to contain awe inspiring vistas on diverse landscapes. but what we get is samey stages with nothing interesting in sight. On top of that, the setting, story and characters are very bland indeed. So, 3/10. Easily the worst game this year for me. There is already talk of sequel, but even if they did give it to a studio that can actually make adventure games, the bland setting and uninteresting characters would still make it no seller, so I advice just burying the whole franchise and not waste anyone's time or money on it in the future.
