Super Mario Party Jamboree is the biggest and most complete title in the series. It's a must-have for fans of the franchise, and a synthesis for everything a game needs for someone who wants to have fun with friends.
Super Mario Party Jamboree is truly the final form of Mario Party on the Nintendo Switch, learning and growing from the past two games to create one massive masterpiece of multiplayer mayhem.
Some might say that this is "another Mario Party game" but for me this is one of the best games I've played in recent years. The excellent gaming experience that Super Mario Party Jamboree provides is simply amazing, and if you like this style of games even a little, you are in for a simply wonderful experience.
One of the best and most complete party games in the entire history of Super Mario, hitting the mark with a great selection of minigames, options, and game modes.
Mario Party has been a multiplayer mainstay for me since right back with the original on N64. To this day the first three are on high rotation thanks to the N64 Online app. It’s really lovely to see Nintendo find creative form with Super Mario Party Jamboree by producing something that largely focuses on the basics. The new maps are excellent, the range of minigames is a delight, the bonus modes are fun, and the energy is playful and joyous. I went into this thinking it would be Nintendo’s equivalent to filler leading into the Christmas season. Turns out it was much more than that and this is a major project that everyone that enjoys multiplayer should pick up.
Super Mario Party Jamboree combines nostalgia and innovation with five new boards, 110 minigames, and a competitive ruleset that rewards skill over luck. While the partner system can add extra strategy, you are quite dependent on where this partner is placed on the board. The CPU doesn't always behave optimally and sometimes makes frustrating choices. The additional modes feel a bit unnecessary, with the unbeatable Party mode standing out as the clear favorite. Despite the lack of major innovations, the game remains perfect for fun evenings with friends and offers enough enjoyment to justify the purchase.
Everything here would be fantastic if it wasn't for the very repetitive mini games. It’s advertised as having over 110 mini games however in the board game mode it’s only around 70 which sounds a lot, however 3 boards in and it’s the same mini games, feels really repetitive already. Superstars had 100 and this seemed to be a good amount and had a nice variety. If Jamboree had the mini games of superstars then it would be a clear 10. Hopefully some more mini games will be added as I am still playing superstars over 2 years but can’t see jamboree lasting as long with the current amount of mini games.
So the great things are all the boards are great I’ve enjoyed playing them loads and the added character rosta really Takes this game up a notch. The presentation is excellent and the whole game looks amazing. But one big huge frustration is that the mini games are advertised at over 110 which sounds great. Nintendo however have only allowed 73 to be playable in the boards mode which means the mini games can feel repetitive as the same ones seem to keep coming up. All mini games are unlocked so it’s only Nintendo limiting which modes the mini games are allowed to be played in.
Why not just allow all the mini games to be played in the Boards mode or just add some from the Mario party superstars and Mario party and port them over. I really hope there is some DLC mini games otherwise this could become a bit repetitive.
If they address this then the game would easily Be a solid 10/10 the 7 boards and character rostas are amazing. Just open up all 110+ mini games they are in the game makes no sense. Or just give us mini games from the previous 2 switch titles. Such an easy fix.
The biggest problem with Jamboree is that AI cheats, it cheats in very obvious and obnoxious ways. The new buddy system is broken and is way too overpowered as well, overall the game is just more of the same with nothing new added to the plate, no new innovations and many recycled mini-games with only a few new ones added. Sure they added a bigger character roster and even brought back to old characters, but the boards themselves are not especially great and either too small and/or poorly balanced.
Best played with human players only, even then the games AI controls the board flow and it is fairly obvious, its predictable nature is the biggest offender and many MP veterans know what I'm talking about here, new gamers and fans will get the most enjoyment but the classic MPs are still superior imho.
I do not understand the critical acclaim for this game. I’ve been gaming for over 40 years and I’ve always liked the Mario Party series, especially the GC ones. My son and I have spent hundreds of hours playing the other 2 MP games on Switch and have had a really good time, so we were excited for this one. The first time we played, I was practically falling asleep it was so God awful slow. We ended up shutting it off due to boredom after about half hour. Side rant: It’s also quite irritating that once again we are forced to use the stupid joy cons. I went through 4 sets of these pieces of junk before I finally bought pro controllers, which have been absolutely stellar. Well guess what? The joy cons I have are janky as heck, of course, so if I want to play this game seriously I’ll have to spend $70 more dollars on POS joy cons. No thanks. The wiggler stage was very bland and completely uninspired. Even from the start you could see the rubberbanding/unfair AI difficulty spikes (which is really starting to annoy me with Nintendo games). Nothing grabbed our attention and we both agreed that the game kinda ****. Fast forward a week or so to tonight. I kept hearing how this was the greatest MP game possibly ever so I convinced him to give it a shot again. This time we played the race track course and again, it was totally unremarkable. We put the computer on fast speed this time so it was slightly better, but still slow as molasses. Nintendo cannot program an AI with reasonable difficulty to save their lives. Again, about a half hour later we were both bored to death and quit. This time for good, I’m sure we’ll never play this again, The mini games are not that fun for the most part, they seem very recycled and most of the 3v1 games are totally unfair one way or the other. It’s really disheartening when the 2 human players go around the board landing on every detrimental space while the AI players speed around collecting all the good stuff. I guess maybe it’s fun for online play, but I’m old school, I don’t play games online with other people. I have no idea why Nintendo chose to not have a 2 vs 2 team setting in this one, it would have made it a lot more fun being on the same team with my kid, and I can’t be the only one who would want that. Nintendo has lost me over the years, 50% of their first party titles seem like horribly half baked slop. Unfortunately this is one of them. I don’t know why there’s such praise for this one, it was a real turd for us.
