The story is entertaining, and it features characters from the Marvel universe that haven't yet surfaced in the movies, such as Fin Fang Foom, Lady Hellbender and the Nova Corps. Add in the requisite humor and self-deprecation and an eclectic killer soundtrack, and you get one of the most enjoyable games of the year.
Eidos Montréal gives us one of the most interesting narrative games of recent times, always taking advantage of the medium's own tools to narrate. Knowledge and affection for the characters, entertaining combat, incessant surprises... one of the best of the year.
I'll be honest, the gameplay is nothing to write home about. But man... The story/script, characters, world building, graphics and soundtrack are so special. Peter Quill (Jon Mclaren voice and motion capture actor) is the perfect bridge to live this experience full of laughter and tears.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a spectacular, albeit lengthy adventure with enjoyable mechanics and a surprisingly deeper story than what is on the surface.
Guardians of the Galaxy shines when it focuses on the characters and the world around them. It might not be the most innovative game this year, but it excellently executes the tried-and-true linear action-adventure formula to deliver a great single-player experience.
I really didn't expect to enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy as much as I did. The game's marketing left me incredibly lukewarm, and I wasn't sure what to expect, even after the first couple of hours with the game. What I found, however, is one of the best stories of the entire year. There's definitely a bit of tedium packed into the overall experience, but Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is an adventure well worth taking, warts and all.
Guardians keeps you strapped in for the ride, and while it does dip once too often, the emotional highs outweigh the patience-testing lows. [Issue#366, p.108]
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a great portrayal of the space-faring heroes and a good game. We encountered some annoying bugs that are hopefully alleviated with patches, and it's pretty linear, but this is an interstellar romp that you can enjoy across a few evenings.
This charming and accessible title offers a delightful experience for both casual and seasoned players alike. Its intuitive gameplay echoes the fun and frenetic action of Ratchet & Clank, while simultaneously delivering a captivating narrative that wouldn't be out of place on the silver screen.Specifically: Engaging Casual Gameplay: The reviewer highlights the game's approachable design, making it enjoyable for players of all skill levels. Fun Factor: A direct comparison to the popular Ratchet & Clank series emphasizes the game's exciting and humorous gameplay. Technical Prowess: While the technical details aren't explicitly mentioned, they are implied by the overall "cool and nice" assessment. Superb Scripting: The comparison to movie-quality scripts underscores the game's strong narrative and dialogue.
Guardians is a decent linear action/adventure, but it lacks substance in its gameplay. The story and strong presentation are let down by shallow combat.
While it's already limiting to be restricted to playing exclusively as Star-Lord, this would be far more forgivable if playing as Star-Lord was especially entertaining. As things are, there's little more to combat than slowly getting through swathes of enemies with blasters that barely pack a punch, and calling on the other Guardians to use their abilities when they come off cooldown. While combat can look a spectacle, it doesn't feel involving or engaging enough.
The time-out team talks are unique, but are only another disappointment. They're never tailored quite appropriately to the circumstances of your fight and the dialogue in them is repeated after you've done a handful of them.
Still, this isn't a bad game! It looks great at times, the story has its moments, and the characters are well realised. It's fun enough to play through too. Even while the combat doesn't live up to what it could've been, it's serviceable. Exploration is rewarded with different outfits which is nice.
Overall, as a package, this is a decent linear single player adventure. While it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity, it's certainly better Square Enix's other Marvel misfire, Marvel's Avengers.
Finally got around to playing it, story was pretty decent, enjoyed the choices in influencing others throughout the game.
Downsides, controls during battle were infuriating at times with visor activating while trying to get off a power shot during reloading, quite a few glitches with graphics, occasionally had to restart checkpoints as game froze during battles.
Overall an enjoyable game
As intriguing and mildly entertaining as this game can be, I really can't recommend anyone bother playing it. Performance is pretty shoddy. I thought at first it might've been a hardware issue on my part but after a decent upgrade I'm still left with awful fuzzy textures and extremely distracting flickers.
Graphical issues aside though it's simply just a dull game. Combat it mundane and repetitive and it's a complete chore to play. If you want Guardians of the Galaxy, stick with the films.
