An excellent addition to the third-person genre, incorporating great components of sound, music, and visuals, as well as bolstering incredibly intense melee combat.
But I could not help but enjoy this program, even with the blood and mutilation modes turned on, because of the ‘feel’ of the game (the nice sense that the world was one where common elements, like light and even gravity – throwing objects is very cool – have meaning).
SImply one of the best action games of all time, and the PC re-release only re-confirmed that.
Don't bother playing with a controller tho, the combo system simply wasn't built for it, and the publisher who handles the re-release have done nothing to fix that.
it was most impressive graphical game after nocturne on pc back then like using shadows quite good. gameplay wise tihs was firt third person souls game basicly. there was die by sword on 98 but quite simplstc even uses mouse hard to control. this game was first good use of souls like third person game plus dismemberment. can comparable with jedi oucast that time but outcast was quake engine. this game engine own was look superior. it very similar to how nocturne on time and like nocturne dreamcast port rumored. game soem times uses noctunre music also which is free music to use. the new relase not add much just straight port but quite welcome like turok.
I liken Blade of Darkness to a popcorn flick. Check your brain at the door, this one’s all about the special effects and boisterous fighting scenes.
It's definitely a good thing that Blade of Darkness exists, therefore its 2021 update is more than welcome, despite the fact that it is an extremely conservative remaster that hasn't really "fixed" the game. Flaws put aside, though, this is not one of those titles that belong in the past and are best left there to collect dust. It's not a title to recommend to just anyone, especially to those with an aversion to its heavy "retro" sensibilities, but those who can get past the clunky and slightly unreliable controls, and stomach the occasionally repetitive gameplay, will immediately get immersed to the strong atmosphere of this Conan the Barbarian-meets-Dark Souls fantasy land of sword and sorcery. And death. Plenty, and plenty of bloody death.
It's hard not to feel some satisfaction from decapitating an enemy with a cunningly timed swipe then watching his headless body loll for a few moments before collapsing in a heap. Or how about this - slice off a baddy's arm then pick it up and beat his mate to death with it. Blimmin' marvellous.
Low "immersion factor". Two-bit, two-frame main character animation. Sluggish and awkward combat mode. Completely unoriginal puzzles. RPG elements are nothing more than a decoration - something to put on a box.
A hidden gem with revolutionary combat system, memorable bosses and decent graphics. It's a must play for dark fantasy fans. Great sword & sorcery game, it's a shame that barbarian character isn't named Conan.
I found it was best played with keyboard only configuration, as mouse and turning keyboard commands conflict often otherwise. Considering the time of its release and better games that flanked it several years prior and one year after (Jedi Outcast and Enclave), BoD is a ho hum jankfest by comparison. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the first level because it was so mediocre and boring. Thankfully, I didn't have nostalgia goggles on when playing this game after the GoG re-release recently.
"One of the games with the worst gameplay mechanics I've ever seen. If I lived for 25 years in a cave and it was the first game I ever played, maybe I would like it."
Is what the reviewer before me said, I would change that last bit thought, even walking feels bizarre, glitchy, and jagged, it feels rude that such a thing was released at all! AVOID.
SummaryStunning, richly detailed fantasy world. Real-ime lighting casts eerie and terrifying shadows. Unrivaled blood and gore combat. Hack off an enemy's limb, then thrash him with it. Learn devastatingly fluid combo attacks and use them to slice your enemies to pieces. [Codemasters]
