If you believe that TEN is a joke, no it is not;
I have not found defects in a game created in 1997 by a single programmer of Ukrainian nationality who alone managed to create an unprecedented graphic engine, arts that come off the body ... Soldier of Fortune? Be was released only later!
Even Romero (John) spoke of this game, and the creator of the fantastic "Dusk" said that Chasm: The Rift was of great inspiration for him.
Unfortunately I have heard many people talk about it badly, but the reality is that I would bet both the arms that only a few have exceeded half of the first level, and have taken as a reference point a bad name that this game has always had "bad quake clone " in Reality is quite far away from this title, if this is a quake clone then at least 80% of the FPS of that period are.
This game has a beautiful, intelligent level design, are 3 times that I finish it and each time it involves me to the point that I cannot detach myself from it for several hours.
The design of the enemies is inspired and unique, when you see it you recognize it immediately for its fascinating atmosphere, which looks like a mix between Alien vs Predator, Jedi Knight, Quake, but with slightly vibrant colors that seems to be also a pinch of 3D Realms in the Texture.
It has been criticized for its linearity, and in fact this is true, but most likely it is a feature desired by its programmer, because it is clear that every detail has been created with care, and in fact it is probably this way of facing the levels that amuses the most, also to take a holiday from the usual historic fps (but it was not a copy of Quake!?)
on purpose! Unlike Quake has a rather lively color palette that alternates every two or three levels, and this helps a lot to keep the interest alive.
It is a title that is destined to become a cult and will probably be remembered as one of the most underestimated FPS in the history of video games.
SummaryOriginating from a small programming team in Russia, Chasm: The Rift is a standard 3D shooter that falls technologically in between Doom and Quake - and scarily enough, isn't that bad.
